Sir Hubert Opperman is Australia's most famous cyclist despite the fact that his cycling career concluded  60 years ago.  In his time he set a series of momentous records for endurance cycling that seemed they would last for eternity.  He single-handedly created a profile for the sport of cycling in Australia that it did not enjoy before and has not experiences since. Read about his cycling exploits in  at Opperman the cyclist

Throughout his long life Hubert Opperman was always associated with Malvern Star.  His cycling exploits built the success of the firm and the entrepreneurial skills of Bruce Small promoted his name and developed his career.  It was a great partnership or in Australian terms mateship.  Read about this relationship at Opperman on Small and "Oppy" and Malvern Star

Following his retirement he joined the Liberal Party and was elected to the Australian Federal Parliament in 1949 representing the seat of Corio.  In 1960 he was appointed Minister for Shipping and Transport in the Federal Government and in 1963 Minister for Immigration.  In 1967 he resigned his seat to become Australia's High Commissioner in Malta.

Opperman's life is well documented in his autobiography "Pedals Politics and People"

An excellent annotated bibliography of his public life exists in Tracy Gibson's "A Guide to the Literature and resources on Sir Hubert Opperman Kt Cr 1968, OBE KSJ", Melbourne, 1968.
