At the time Bruce Small was a suburban traveller at Finlay Bros. who were prosperous wholesalers and retailers of motor cycle parts, retailers of bicycles and manufacturers of sidecars. The manager who had recruited Small to Finlay Bros. was E.J. "Ernie" Ogilvy.
When Bruce Small left to buy the bike shop Ogilvy provided part of the finance needed and so became a partner in the business, though he maintained his employment at Finlay Bros. It was 1925 before Ogilvy finally sold out his share of the business.
