BICYCLES MANUFACTURED 1900-1920

These are some of the bicycles owned by the Canberra Bicycle Museum, as representative of this era.

Cross Frame Safety (1900's)
Called a "Centaur Featherweight" and built in England. This cross frame safety weighing 26 lbs was very light for it's time and sold for 19 pounds 19 shillings in the UK at the turn of the century, when the average wage was 7 shillings per week.  [#455]
Ladies Roadster (1910)
Manufactured by Halfords Cycles, Birmingham, U.K. A quality ladies bicycle, built with Halford parts and complete with skirtguard and basket. [#138]
Men’s Army Bicycle (1913-1919)
Manufactured in Germany and issued to the Army during World War I. Due to the shortage of rubber during this period, some enterprising person improvised this spring arrangement around the wheel rims instead of rubber tyres. [#170]
Motorised Bicycle (c 1914)
Built by Birmingham Small Arms Co. Ltd. (BSA) in Birmingham, U.K. This bicycle has been retrofitted with a cycle motor, a self contained unit, designed to fit over and drive the front wheel, from the 1950's. [#717]
